An annual English Language Olympiad was held at our University at the Foreign and Russian Philology Faculty on January 18, 2019. This competition had aroused much interest among young people. About 90 students from schools, gymnasiums and lyceums of the city and the region, including such cities as Kurchatov, Ridder and Ayagoz, took part in the competition.
The Olympiad opening ceremony began in the assembly hall with the opening speech of Faculty Dean Gainigul Ismailova who spoke about the faculty’s professions and University’s international programs.
Then Foreign Philology and Translation Department Head Gulzhaukhar Kurebaeva addressed the meeting, explaining the procedure of the Olympiad for schoolchildren and a workshop for school teachers.
In addition, a representative of the School Leaver Recruiting Center showed the audience a University presentation, the slides of which described in detail the structure of the faculties, and also was speaking about currently popular professions.
Foreign Philology and Translation Department students and teachers pleased the guests with a small concert program, after which the students went to classrooms and started performing competitive tasks.
Olympiad participants had demonstrated their skills in English grammar, listening and speaking. After each round, a careful selection of finalists was made on the basis of received points.
According to the results of all the rounds, winners were awarded: the students of high schools and the students of gymnasiums and lyceums separately. Participants received diplomas and letters of thanks as well as memorable prizes from University.
Schoolchildren apparently used their best efforts to perform up to the mark in the important competition. And we would like to wish the guys new success now in the words of Winston S. Churchill: “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
